Skilled Worker – How to Apply

Applying as a skilled worker to Canada involves several key steps and criteria, depending on the specific immigration program you qualify for, such as the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) or the Canadian Experience Class (CEC).

Steps to Apply

  1. Check Eligibility:

    • Determine if you meet the eligibility criteria for the FSWP, CEC, or another relevant program based on factors like work experience, language proficiency, and education.
  2. Create an Express Entry Profile:

    • Submit an online profile through the Express Entry system, providing detailed information about your work experience, education, language skills, and other relevant details.
  3. Receive a CRS Score:

    • Upon submitting your profile, you will receive a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score based on factors such as age, education, work experience, language proficiency, and additional points (like provincial nominations or job offers).
  4. Enter the Express Entry Pool:

    • Your profile enters the Express Entry pool where it is ranked against other candidates based on your CRS score. Higher scores increase your chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
  5. Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA):

    • If you meet the CRS score cut-off in a draw, you may receive an ITA from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to apply for permanent residency.
  6. Submit Application:

    • Accept the ITA within 60 days and submit a complete application for permanent residency online, including all required documents such as proof of funds, language test results, and educational credentials.
  7. Application Processing:

    • IRCC processes applications typically within six months, during which you may be asked to provide additional information or attend an interview.
  8. Receive Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR):

    • If your application is approved, you will receive a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) and, if applicable, a permanent resident visa.
  9. Arrive in Canada:

    • Upon receiving your COPR, travel to Canada and present your documents at a Canadian port of entry to officially become a permanent resident.
