Super Visa

Information for parents and grandparents processing times, and what to expect when you arrive in Canada.

Super Visa

  • The Super Visa is a special type of visa introduced by the Government of Canada to facilitate extended visits for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents. It allows eligible applicants to stay in Canada for up to two years per visit, with the visa itself valid for a period of up to 10 years. This means that holders of a Super Visa can travel to and from Canada multiple times within the validity period without needing to renew their visa.

    Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for a Super Visa, applicants must meet the following criteria:

    1. Relationship: They must be the parents or grandparents of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.

    2. Financial Support: The Canadian host (child or grandchild) must provide a written commitment to financially support the applicant during their stay in Canada, proving they meet minimum income requirements.

    3. Medical Insurance: Applicants must provide proof of Canadian medical insurance coverage for at least one year, showing that it covers health care, hospitalization, and repatriation.

    4. Purpose of Visit: Applicants must demonstrate the purpose of their visit to Canada and their intent to return to their home country at the end of their authorized stay.

    5. Admissibility: They must meet standard admissibility requirements, including passing a medical examination and security checks.

    Application Process

    1. Application Submission: Applicants need to submit their application to the visa office responsible for their country or region.

    2. Processing Time: Processing times vary depending on the visa office and individual circumstances, but generally, applicants are notified of the decision within a few months.

    3. Approval: If approved, the applicant will receive a letter of introduction confirming their Super Visa approval. They must then present this letter to a border officer upon entering Canada to receive the Super Visa.

    4. Travel: With a Super Visa, holders can travel to Canada multiple times within the validity period (up to 10 years) and stay for up to two years per visit.

    Benefits

    • Extended Stay: Allows parents and grandparents to stay in Canada for extended periods, promoting family reunification and support.

    • Flexibility: Provides flexibility with multiple entries, reducing the need for frequent visa renewals.

    • Family Support: Enables elderly family members to be closer to their Canadian relatives for extended periods without the need for permanent residency.

Overall, the Super Visa is a beneficial option for eligible parents and grandparents wishing to visit and spend time with their families in Canada for extended periods while ensuring they have access to necessary health care coverage during their stay.
